Galbi (갈비Korean BBQ Beef Short Ribs)

How I craved for BBQ now… who wouldn’t – with all those advertisements on TV or grocery store inserts on the mail, marketing their food items for the upcoming Memorial Day. Well, I am usually not easy to be ‘swayed’ by marketing ads, BUT still, it is tempting to see all those images emphasizing mostly on BBQ stuff while I AM CRAVING for it. So, that gives me an idea to make Galbi (갈비) which literally means ribs.

Of all the Galbi I have ever tried at Korean restaurants, I would say they mostly are grilled and have the basic taste of garlic, soy sauce and sugar. For meat lover, I don’t think you can ever go wrong with Galbi, it is very easy to make, very flavorful, so tender, and juicy. It doesn’t take a lot of time to grill, as the short ribs are on the thinner side. You can eat, and grill the next one, and eat again without waiting in between for too long.

Imagine… you set the portable grill on your table – in front of the TV. About 10-15 minutes before your favorite TV show/game starts, heat the grill up. Once heated, put the marinated ribs on top of it, and… , the ribs are sizzling away. Your show/game starts and, voila, you can start your meal while watching. Perrrfffect! Anyway, here is my version of Galbi (갈비), give it a try and let me know, will you?

Tip:

  1. After refrigerate for at least 6 hours, you can freeze the short ribs in the zipper bag for up to a week. This way, you can have some quick-to-make yet delicious meal during your busy week.
  2. If you don’t have any grill, you can pan-fried it with or without oil.
  3. In this recipe, I use sweet soy sauce – just because I love it. You can substitute it with brown sugar.

Galbi 갈비

Ingredients:

  • 5 lbs beef short ribs

Marinate sauce

Directions:

  • Combine together all the above ingredients for marinate sauce and mix well.
  • In a large plastic zipper bag, put the short ribs and pour the marinate sauce over. Refrigerate the bag for at least 6 hours so that the sauce can blend in well to the meat.
  • Preheat grill in a medium-high heat. Place the marinated short ribs onto the heated grill. Remove any excess marinade. Cook the ribs about 3 to 7 minutes per side, depending how thick the short ribs is.
