Udang Bakar Manis Bumbu Bawang (Grilled Sweet Garlic Shrimp Skewers)

Shrimp is my family’s ultimate seafood favorite regardless of the size, the type, the method of cooking, you name it. This particular easy-to-prep recipe, Udang bakar manis bumbu bawang (grilled sweet garlic shrimp skewer) is one of the winners as it is so juicy and burst with intense bold flavor. Plus, when I made udang bakar (grilled shrimp) the very first time, because of the presentation of using skewers on shrimp, it made my picky little ones curious enough to try it without any question asked.

Grilled Sweet Garlic Shrimp Skewers

When you have busy weeknights, this udang bakar (grilled shrimp) can be a perfect meal. You don’t need to have an outdoor grill. I honestly grill these shrimps on the stovetop using a grill pan. It can be prepared and cooked for less than 30 minutes. Also, this grilled shrimp is very versatile that you can pretty much paired it with baked potato, salad (you can try this easy tomato salad as an idea), fluffy steam rice, and so on. Easy enough, right?

Tip: Soak the skewers in cold water for at least an hour prior to grilling. This is to prevent the skewers from burning.

Udang Bakar Manis Bumbu Bawang (Grilled Shrimp Skewers)
Ingredients
  • 1 lb of large shrimp – peeled and deveined
  • 1 lemon – squeezed to get the juice
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • ½ medium-sized shallot
  • 3 tablespoon melted butter – set one tablespoon aside for grilling
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika powder
  • A pinch of salt and pepper
  • 3 tablespoon sweet soy sauce (or can be substituted with honey)
  • Bamboo skewers
Directions
  • Soak the skewers in cold water for at least an hour prior to using. This is to prevent the skewers from burning when grilling.
  • In a blender, add lemon juice, garlic, shallot, 2 tablespoon of melted butter, turmeric, paprika powder, sweet soy sauce, salt and pepper.
  • Blend until they are all mixed up nicely. It will be a bit ‘pulpy’.
  • Add the shrimp into a Ziploc bag or resealable bag. Then, add the blended marinade and toss it to coat the shrimps evenly.
  • Let it marinate for 15-20 minutes. Don’t leave it longer than one hour or overnight, the shrimp might get cooked by the lemon juice acid.
  • Place each shrimp onto the skewers. Place the skewers onto the grill and cook them for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until the shrimp change to pink color.
  • Put it onto the serving plate. The grilled shrimp is ready to be served!
